Brown Sugar a companion SVOD service owned by Bounce TV, an American digital multicast television network that is owned by Katz Broadcasting, a subsidiary of E. W. Scripps Company.

The service launched in 2016 with 111 films, including Blacula, Cleopatra Jones, Foxy Brown, The Mack, Super Fly, and Shaft.

Brown Sugar content is narrower in scope than that of Bounce TV. Bounce TV’s original Programming features their flagship series Saints & Sinners and syndicated programming that includes The Wendy Williams Show, The Bernie Mack Show and A Different World. Bounce TV features programming geared toward an African American audience that skews older than the demographic that its cable competitor BET primarily targets (adults between the ages of 25 and 54, compared to BET's target demographic of youths and adults ages 12 to 34).

Other cable and satellite channels that service the African-American community include TV One, owned by Radio One, and Aspire, owned by Magic Johnson.

Bounce TV to Launch ‘Brown Sugar’ SVOD Service

Movie subscription service to offer ‘baddest’ 1970s African-American films

November 17, 2016

Bounce TV today has launched an over the top streaming service featuring the popular African-American-themedmovies from the 1970s and 1980s.

The service, dubbed Brown Sugar, will feature an unedited and commercial free library of 1970s films often referred to as “Blaxploitation” movies like Black Caesar, Shaft, Super Fly, Uptown Saturday Night and Cleopatra Jones, said company officials. The service will cost $3.99 per month with a free initial trial period for subscribers.

Veteran actors Fred Williamson and Pam Grier have been named officials ambassadors for Brown Sugar, which was initially the official name of a Saturday night movie programming block on Bounce.

Grier in a statement said that the service is “just like Netflix, only blacker.”/p>

Subscribers can download Brown Sugar to mobile phones and tablets in the Google Play Store and iTunes App Store, or access the service via the www.BrownSugar.com site, said company officials.
